Meet Balakrishna Aiya (76): The Man Who Carved a Path to Water with Sheer Determination I 4th June 2025

"One more inspiring story... Jitan Ram Manjhi's spirit lives on in Mr. Balakrishna Aiya, who built a stairway to safely access water in his hamlet in Canacona, Goa. (Source: TOI)"

"What looks impossible to others is only a challenge waiting for a solution," says 76-year-old Balakrishna Aiya from Canacona, Goa.

Living in the rocky village of Loliem, where water is hard to find, Balakrishna Aiya turned a tough situation into a story of grit and innovation. His home lies in the Maddi-Tolop region, a name that reflects the harsh landscape—rocky layers, clay, and slippery black stone that make it nearly impossible to dig wells.

Experts had declared the area unfit for digging, saying it was too risky and unsafe. But Aiya saw a possibility where others only saw failure.

"I studied the land and found a way no one had thought of before," he shares. Using simple tools and clever thinking, Aiya designed a safe stairway that led down to the water level. This stair-like design allowed safe entry for workers, avoiding the dangers of sudden cave-ins. His method combined careful observation, traditional knowledge, and a deep desire to help his community.

In addition to his water solution, Aiya is a self-taught inventor. He never completed formal education but kept learning from life. From drawing sketches to teaching in a local school, he has worn many hats. To earn a living, he also started making eco-friendly brooms using a unique design that caught attention. He even built a custom broom handle device using scrap metal and his own creativity.

His simple but effective approach has made him a local hero and won him awards, including the prestigious Kala Gaurav Puraskar and recognition from the Goa State Biodiversity Board.

Aiya proves that even without formal training, a determined mind can bring powerful change. His story is a reminder that innovation isn't limited to labs or fancy degrees—it begins with understanding the land, loving your people, and being willing to try.

Positive Quote to Remember: "True innovation comes from those who care enough to solve problems others walk away from."
