Turning around pattern: Jobs Reversing trend: Jobs in Indian companies attract resumes from abroad

One of the key reasons for this expected transition now is the swiftness with which even traditional Indian companies have adapted to work from home as a concept and ensured business continuity.

Bangalore: When 3D India Staffing Research & Consulting Co India(3D India Group) recently advertised for an opening in a marketing role at the recruitment firm, it was surprised to receive a response from candidates not only across India but from the US and Gulf Countries as well. Both employers and employees have recognised the potential of working from any location. This has opened up a geographically diverse talent pool for companies to hire from. For candidates, the canvas of job opportunities just got wider.

Not only that. The situation could be advantageous for India as global companies are expected to outsource jobs, said hiring firms. 3D India Group head (strategic account management) Dhruv Dev Dubey said global CEOs the firm interacts with are keen on outsourcing to India jobs in R&D, processing and design, in addition to technology.

"Some global CEOs we are talking to are looking at India for its quality talent. This could be another wave of jobs being outsourced to India in a big way. A number of high-end jobs — which were hitherto kept close to the mothership of an MNC, especially in FMCG (fast-moving consumer goods), FMCD (consumer durables), banking and liquor industries — are expected to relocate to India. Some of these companies had earlier shied away from doing so, for various reasons," said Dubey.

One of the key reasons for this expected transition now is the swiftness with which even traditional Indian companies have adapted to work from home as a concept and ensured business continuity. Earlier, some companies were averse to such an idea. "For these global companies, there's a cost advantage and they would be keen on improving their long-term cash flows. Moreover, language is a big advantage for Indian talent," said Dubey.

The Bengaluru-headquartered 3D India Group Founder & CEO Dhruv Dubey said it is now possible for 'mind workers', not 'hand workers'. They can work from anywhere in the country, if not across time zones, for a local firm. "If you are an individual contributor, not a team leader, you can operate from any location. For instance, coding can be done from anywhere. We now have employees who are working from their hometowns. All they need is a laptop."

The trend is visible mostly among younger employees who were living away from their families in big cities and have now returned to their hometowns. Family support during these trying times is important, and so is home-cooked food. Organisations are looking at it as an opportunity to get good talent, no matter where they are based, so long as they have a laptop/computer at home and good broadband connectivity. For these companies and also employees, geography is now history.

All that an organisation's checklist requires is technological readiness in a candidate. What companies are strengthening, on the other hand, are cyber security systems.

Many progressive organisations are now giving the go ahead, even when a senior level hire is not based at the headquarters and is operating from any geography. For companies, it saves up to an average of Rs 5-10 lakh on relocation costs for a senior-level role. At least 25% of the candidates placed are from another location and they used to go through relocation procedures.

This has removed certain restrictions for candidates and employers. "Earlier, a candidate had to forego a good career opportunity because he or she couldn't relocate for various reasons. Certain roles, such as a sales head of a region, cannot be located elsewhere. For roles in investment banking and consumer companies, it doesn't matter where talent is located," said Dubey.
