Social media is a raging trend in
the present times, and has taken the online world by storm. It is especially
popular amongst teenagers and young adults. People start their day with
updating their statuses on Facebook and keep accessing other such sites like
twitter, lindn throughout the day. It has its advantages though, for instance,
one can connect with his friends and family or even make new friends. On social
media websites, one can find people with common interests, and associate with likeminded
people. On the other hand, these websites can be harmful too.
One’s account can be hacked or
his personal information can be accessed by a third party. Using social media
websites during office hours is another matter which has gained much heat
lately. Employees spend a major part of their day posting content on facebook,
twitter, instagram which is a major cause for concern. Surveys done across the
internet show that people and especially office employees have become less
productive due to more and more exposure to these sites. Even very committed
professionals succumb to the charm of the social media sites.
To deal with the issue,
corporates have adopted certain preventive measures, like, some companies have
stringent policies, they just block these websites, however some companies have
set rules as to how and when to access sites. Employees argue that sites like
twitter and facebook are an easy way to find out whats trending which helps
them perform better in their jobs. However there are times when this thinking
backfires and employees end up wasting their time instead. Employees even say
that accessing these websites helps them be creative in their work and that
they feel recharged after using them.
A way to manage the situation is
to keep aside short breaks for using the sites or allowing the employees to
access the sites without letting the work suffer. One can even utilize the lunch
break to use these websites. Using social media in ones personal life is very
different from accessing it in office. There should be a sense of discipline in
the workplace, a moral obligation to focus more on work and less on
distractions.
